RICHMOND, VA (October 19, 2020) – Totem Insights, a cloud-based Supporter Engagement Platform for nonprofits, has officially changed its name to Humanitru. The name change, which also includes a new logo, was in response to feedback received over the use of the Native American symbol of a “totem” used as the company name and logo. Critics cited such use as an example of cultural appropriation.
It’s believed that the etymology of the word “totem” dates back to the mid-18th century and was first used by the Anishinaabe-Ojibwe people of North America. While the name was inspired by the Native American story of the spirit, oneness, and community, the team at Humanitru had become increasingly aware of the perception of insensitivity with the use of the word by the non-Native American population.
The new name of Humanitru, which includes variations of the words, “human” and “true,” is a testament to Humanitru’s commitment to the human connection first and foremost. Humanitru strives to leverage the technology tools they create and provide to nonprofits in ways that amplify that human connection.
